Core aeration
Stronger roots. Healthier lawn. Core aeration pulls plugs of soil out of a compacted lawn so water, air and nutrients reach the roots. In the Triangle, fall is the time to do it on fescue, and it pairs with overseeding.
Most lawns around Apex sit on heavy clay. After a summer of foot traffic, mowing and heat, that soil packs down and the roots cannot get what they need. Core aeration pulls thousands of small plugs out of the lawn and opens it back up.
For tall fescue, which is what most homes here have, the window is mid-September to mid-October. We aerate, then overseed while the holes are open so new seed makes real contact with soil. Warm-season lawns like bermuda and zoysia get aerated in late spring instead, once they are growing hard.
Good to know
- Best paired with overseeding and a fall fertilizer
- Plugs break down on their own in a couple of weeks. Leave them.
- Mark sprinkler heads and shallow lines before we come
- Water new seed lightly every day for the first two weeks

Common questions
Do I need to overseed too?
If you have fescue, yes, most of the time. Aeration opens the soil and seed fills the thin spots. Doing both at once is the most cost-effective way to thicken a lawn.
How do I know if my lawn is fescue or bermuda?
Fescue stays green through winter and grows in clumps. Bermuda turns tan and goes dormant after the first frost. Send us a photo and we will tell you.
