Learn more →What your yard needs this month
The Triangle sits in the transition zone, so timing matters. Most lawns here are tall fescue, and fall is their season. Here is what we would do in an Apex yard each month.
- Dormant season: the easiest time for big tree pruning and removals, with the leaves down
- Check gutters and drainage after winter storms
- Plan spring beds and patio projects now to get on the schedule
- Prune crape myrtles and summer-flowering shrubs before new growth
- Pre-emergent for crabgrass goes down late February to mid-March
- Cut back ornamental grasses
- Fresh mulch or pine straw on the beds, with clean edges
- First mows of the year as fescue wakes up
- Last call for pre-emergent before soil warms
- Weekly mowing season starts for most lawns
- Plant shrubs and trees while it is still mild
- Bermuda and zoysia lawns green up; hold off on heavy work until they do
- Raise the mower: fescue wants 3.5 to 4 inches before the heat
- Aerate bermuda and zoysia late May into June
- Fix drainage trouble spots after spring storms
- Mow, edge and trim weekly
- Water deep and less often, early in the morning
- Hurricane season starts: have dead limbs and leaning trees looked at
- Fescue is stressed in the heat. Do not seed now, just keep it tall and watered
- Keep beds weeded so mulch keeps working
- Sod and aeration for warm-season lawns
- Book fall aeration and overseeding now, the calendar fills fast
- Storm-prep tree trimming
- Order mulch for fall top-ups
- Prime time: core aerate and overseed tall fescue from mid-September on
- Fall fertilizer
- Plant trees and shrubs, the best planting season here
- Finish aeration and overseeding by mid-month
- Keep new seed watered daily until it is up
- First leaf cleanups start late in the month
- Leaf removal rounds as the oaks and maples drop
- Last regular mows
- Gutter cleaning once most leaves are down
- Final leaf cleanup and gutter cleaning
- Tree work and removals in the dormant season
- Plan hardscape projects for spring
